Buying gold in Kolkata

Bowbazar is less a shopping street than a manufacturing district that happens to sell to the public. Behind the retail frontage on B.B. Ganguly Street and towards Sealdah sit the galan karkhanas, small gold melting and finishing workshops packed into narrow alleys, where most of what Kolkata wears is actually made.

The work is done by hand and in stages. A single necklace can pass through around fifteen separate operations, from melting and wire drawing through casting, plaster moulding, hand finishing and polishing, and take roughly two weeks to complete. Bengal's karigars have supplied not just the city but jewellers across India for generations, and the trade here has run on that basis since the early twentieth century. Deb Jewellers, one of the established names, has been trading since the 1950s.

That craft base shapes what Kolkata buys. Bengali design favours lighter, more intricate pieces than the heavy sets common in the north and south, and filigree and fine handwork carry a premium that has nothing to do with weight.

Demand is organised around the Bengali calendar rather than the national one. Durga Puja is the peak, with Poila Boishakh and the Bengali wedding season behind it, and Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya add to rather than define the year.

One local detail worth knowing: hallmarking has tightened what workshops can absorb as loss, with karigars now working to a margin of only two to three grams per hundred grams of gold. If a shop quotes you a wastage figure well above that on a machine-made piece, ask what it is for.
