Buying gold in Jaipur
Johari Bazaar is the oldest market in Jaipur and was commissioned by Maharaja Jai Singh II as part of the original walled city. The name is literal: a johri is a gem dealer, and the street was named for the merchants who worked it.
That history explains why buying gold in Jaipur is different from buying it anywhere else. This is a coloured stone city before it is a gold city, and it has grown into a major centre for cutting and trading coloured stones. The jewellery that comes out of Johari Bazaar is built around kundan and jadau work, where uncut stones are set into gold foil, and around meenakari enamelling on the reverse of a piece, a face the wearer never shows anyone.
The commercial consequence is that the metal rate matters less here than it does elsewhere. On a kundan or meenakari piece the craft can be worth a large multiple of the gold in it, and the making charge is not a markup on labour so much as the actual product you are buying. Comparing two Jaipur quotations on making charge percentage alone tells you very little.
Peak buying runs through Teej and Gangaur, both particularly strong in Rajasthan, with Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya and the wedding season on top.
For a plain gold chain or coin, the rate on this page applies in Jaipur as it does anywhere. For anything with stones in it, ask for the gold weight and the stone weight separately, because you are paying the metal rate on only one of them and a craft premium on the other.
