Common questions
- Can you buy 24 carat gold jewellery?
- Essentially no. At 99.9% purity gold is soft enough to bend by hand, so it will not hold stones or keep its shape. What is sold as 24K is coins, bars and biscuits. Jewellery in India is almost always 22K or 18K.
- Why is the 24K rate the one quoted in the news?
- It is the benchmark the trade prices from. Every other purity is a proportion of it, so quoting 999 lets everyone convert to whatever purity they deal in.
